Apologies for the brief hiatus – I have been caught in the craziness that is moving. God, I forgot how hard, exhausting, and time consuming moving is. Thankfully, we have an awesome and very unique happy hour spot close to our new place – The Puffin Cafe.photo 2The place is literally floating on the Columbia River – I have been to many restaurants on the waterfront, but nothing quite like this. As you are sitting there you will suddenly feel the restaurant move and lurch around…probably not always the best thing when people are drinking $5 margaritas, but damn it sure is fun! Even more fun if you own a boat and can park it right out front!Puffin CafeWe showed up to happy hour after a particularly rough day of moving, but this margarita with the fun mermaid cheered me right up!MargaritaWe also enjoyed some good grub…chips n salsa trioA chips and salsa trio – from left – black bean, mango, and house salsa.Jerk Chicken SandwichJerk Chicken Sandwich and Waffle Fries…Shrimp TacosAnd last but not least Shrimp Tacos with Fried Okra.Mt HoodThis is a super fun place to visit on a beautiful day! I was amazed we sat outside on a slightly brisk but beautiful October evening. Above is your view of Mt. Hood. Below was my view from where I sat. Doofy husband, margarita in hand, and a sunset to match…Cheers to our new neighborhood joint!View from the deck

Orcas

It’s tough to believe I didn’t share this with you 2 seconds after I got home from Labor Day Weekend 2012, but let’s just say I was a little tired. We had the privilege of going to our friend Danny’s cabin on Orcas Island last year, and I was going through photos and found all of these gems and am dreaming of going back.

Stairs down to the beach from the cabin.

Stairs down to the beach from the cabin.

This cabin has been in Danny’s family since the 1930’s. You step onto the property and you step back in time…It really makes me wish my Grandpa kept around relics like this instead of Costco cottage cheese containers (that’s a very unpretty story for another time).

Old Wood Stove that we cooked on all weekend.

We spent the whole weekend on the beach, kayaking, crabbing, bonfire-ing, and relaxing with no cell service. Hands down one of the best weekends ever.

I forgot to mention there are tons of Starfish on the beach.

Check out my epic ski day (and lodge lunch!) at Crystal Mountain in photos, and if you want my entire skiing history, read on!

We had a surprisingly fancy lodge lunch. I was ready for pizza, beer, and chili cheese fries...instead we got Poutine, boozy beverages, halibut w/ spaetzle, and macncheese!

I don’t have the greatest history with skiing. This kind of sucks when you come from a family of excellent skiers. Something always seems to happen to screw me over. Let’s go over the history:

Early 90’s: I’m about 5 years old and supposed to go skiing for the first time. I wake up with a fever, my mom wants me to stay home but I INSIST on going because I am so excited. I end up sleeping in the lodge all day because I’m so sick. Then I join swim team and never get the chance to ski till…

Fast Forward to early 2000’s: I am super lucky and end up skiing for the first time in Vail. My mom gives me a great lesson, but I am uncoordinated and fall constantly. Wiping out trying to get off the chairlift becomes my biggest fear (mostly because everyone sees you and it’s really embarrassing).

The Last Few Years: Skiing has been pretty nonexistent from being in a long distance relationship. When you are traveling a few hours to see each other, you don’t really feel like getting back in the car to drive to the mountain.

Present Day: Make way for one of many New Year’s Resolutions! SKI MORE! My goal is to make it to the mountain as much as I can, and to just get more comfortable. I tend to have an anxiety level that skyrockets in groups or in large crowds, which is hilarious when you know a large number of people who are basically professional skiers.

Driving. Luckily my Alaskan man knows how to drive in High Altitude (Even though the roads were clear I probably would have driven 20 mph slower)

Luckily, I think I have broken my bad luck streak, because a few Sunday’s ago I had my best ski day yet! It helps that I was given a private lesson by this really cool ski racer I know…We got to the mountain right when they opened…and skied during the Seahawks Game (Poor Hawks) so there was barely anyone on the slopes…and it was BEAUTIFUL! Cold, clear, and crisp. I only fell ONE TIME! That’s a new record. Let’s hope I can stick with my goal, get out more, get comfortable, and see more beautiful days! I’ll report back, hopefully sooner rather than later!

Early Morning drives to the mountain: the only way to go.

Smoked Whitefish and Lox Plate

Stopsky’s has become one of our go-to places close to home. We have encountered some of the best servers in the greater Seattle area here…Everyone who works at Stopsky’s has tons of personality and makes our dining experience totally enjoyable. Plus the food rocks! Lots of unique items on the menu, and an irresistible pastry case (That I of course did not get a picture of). But still…feast your eyes on all the delicious-ness below! They also let us bring Otto when we sit outside 🙂

Mimosas and Bloody Marys…Obviously!

Rueben

Matzoh Brei – Honey, apple sauce, sour cream, thyme

Kreplach Soup – Soup w/ Brisket filled dumplings
