The 21st Night of Septembaaa?

It is a “Holiday” that I have celebrated the last few years, for several reasons:

1. The song by Earth, Wind & Fire is, and always will be, one of my all time favorites.
2. It’s my Mother-in-Law’s Birthday.
3. Who doesn’t love September?!?

Even though I typically listen to this song on repeat for most of September, it’s really a great song for any day, and always brings back memories for me that are filled with joy and love.

Here is a look at our September, we have managed to do a lot of fun things post-honeymoon.

We took the Water Taxi from Downtown to West Seattle and had dinner at Marination Ma Kai, right off the Water Taxi Terminal. This is one of the tastiest and funnest double dates we’ve ever been on! The food is absolutely incredible, service rocks, and all I can say is I want more!

Technically this wasn’t in September, but Jordan’s work on the new Husky Stadium is officially complete and the new facility is amazing! So proud of this Husky.

I have been reading all about Shanik in South Lake Union. It’s the sister restaurant of the highly regarded Vij’s in Vancouver, Canada. This was probably the awesomest Indian Food I have ever tasted. Warning: The menu reads, “We get a new batch of cayenne every week, so if you are feeling the heat please ask for some raita!” Holy Smokes, I felt the heat, not in a mouth-is-on-fire kind of way…but let’s just say it put a whole new meaning to the phrase “Meat Sweats.” The most worth-it meat sweats ever.

It’s definitely still Summer when you are eating Caprese Salads with fresh garden heirloom tomatoes, garden basil, and Rose. It’s the only thing I want to make with our garden tomatoes. Why would I want to roast those beauties when they are perfect raw?!?

Swim Across America

My mom, aunt, uncle and I participated in Swim Across America. My aunt and I did the 2 mile swim, mom and Uncle Don did the half mile race. Swim Across America is dedicated to raising money for cancer research, prevention and treatment. This year our team swam in honor of Tricia, who is a true survivor and had a double mastectomy in the Spring. We all had a very fun and successful day, it was great to be a part of such a wonderful team.

In other news, it has come to our attention that our dog poops in the lake. Has anyone ever heard of this before?!? It is truly bizarre, and I cannot help but crack up at the fact that Otto has been caught doing this on more than one occasion. Maybe he wants to poop in the toilet? Maybe he feels more relaxed in the cooling waters? Who knows, we have seen him pee in the lake many times before, but he is taking it to the next level.

Oh my gosh you guys, I finally went to the Puyallup Fair!

The Fair

It is kind of a big deal that in my lifetime, I have never been. It’s something that every person I know from the greater Seattle area has done at least once, dating back to my grandparents. Another big deal: They have decided to start calling it “The Washington State Fair” when it has always been known as “The Puyallup.” This is to the dismay of just about everyone within a 200 mile radius of King County.

September is usually a busy month, and I guess I just never got around to it. Plus, as we know, the Fair is always expensive, crowded, and all wrapped up into a ball and deep-fried. Buuut then we went and it was pretty awesome and interesting…but my Fair quota will be filled for at least the next year or ten.

We bought a Fair Value Pack at Fred Meyer before going. It got us admission, some food bucks, and 6 rides, which was all we really needed (except for the fact that 10 food bucks buys you about one french fry and a bite of an elephant ear). Still, better than the price of admission at the gate and 10 food dollars is better than none! Of course, this “deal” changes every year, but the Fair website is very helpful at helping you plan your trip.

More than anything, the Puyallup Fair is famous for the Fisher Fair Scones. They have been around forever and you basically aren’t from Washington if you don’t know what they are. In a nutshell: buttery, flaky, and jam-filled. A trip to the fair isn’t complete without one. Bonus: They are a very economical fair food item and guilt free compared to most offerings. To this day, I have never made a scone “from scratch” because you can buy the Fisher Scone Mix at almost any local grocery store. True Story: Jordan didn’t even know what scones were until he started dating me.

What else can you deep fry these days? Although ever so tempting, we managed to restrain ourselves from buying this booth out. I just want plain butter on toast and noodles and everything else in this world, for the love of God why try deep frying it? Full Disclosure: If you offered to buy me some I probably would have tried it. Although it really does seem dangerous, like it would burn your mouth off?

Whoa, another new fair item I did not approve of (Jordan did it anyways). A sno cone station where you get to add your own flavors. First of all, these syrup stations were surrounded by bees, and you know every child got way more corn syrup than any person behind the counter would ever add. Lastly, we all know that Hawaiian Shave Ice is the only way to go, and there weren’t nearly as many flavors available. Tiger’s Blood? Nope. Way to crush all of my shave ice dreams from yesteryear.

For a trip to the fair, we held it together pretty well. Not too much of an overload of deep fried stuff…although I reallllly wanted an elephant ear, I always feel gross after eating one so I opted out for the first time ever. They did have deep fried rice crispy treats, which intrigued me much more than your standard twinkie, snickers, oreo, or butter…Until next time I suppose?

The rides are pretty standard, the memories are there but I have noticed many of the rides have updated names. Gravatron? Spider? Ring of Fire? All of those rides have different names now, it made me sad for .25 seconds. Three rides each for us was all we needed, but we paid extra for the “Extreme Scream” (which used to be called the Drop Zone, btw). It was worth it!

I freaked out when Jordan told me he had never, EVER gone down a Giant Slide (also see: Big Pink Slide). This was an outrage! How can you even be a person if you never have gone down a giant slide at the fair? It’s a rite of passage! A must-do as a child! It’s never too late though…We went with all the kiddos but I totally beat Jordan.

Fisher Fair Scones

Legendary Fisher Fair Scones. This picture makes me drool.

I remember the first time I heard about Fisher Scones was when my mom was RAVING about them. I had no idea what she was talking about, all I could think of was, “What’s so great about a scone?” There are a lot of scones out there in coffee shops that are always dry and boring…so these ones had to be good.

It turns out Fisher Fair Scones bring back memories for countless people in the Pacific Northwest. Anyone who has been to the Puyallup Fair in the last 100 years has eaten one of the scones or heard of them, and for good reason. I FINALLY had my first Fisher Scone this week, after my boss had brought them in from the UVillage Sidewalk Sale. They were still warm, and essentially perfect.

Now, I have made the Fisher Scones with the mix that is sold in grocery stores around Washington – but you know how some things just aren’t the same? This is one of those cases. They somehow shape the scones perfectly, and slice them perfectly to tuck in just the right amount of raspberry jam. When I make them (by myself, on a Saturday morning, possibly a random Tuesday night) I devour them too fast to care about the importance of jam placement and shaping presentation. Sigh. It’s just one of those things I guess.

If you are ever at a Northwest Fair, particularly the Puyallup Fair, do not pass up the Fisher Scones when you see them.
