As usual, I am behind on posting, but what’s new? I didn’t really make a resolution to post things right as they happen…because hey, I try to make realistic resolutions.
BUT!!! We spent our holiday in Oklahoma City this year with family. I had never been! I was super excited, and even though we landed and the city was half covered in ice, it all melted and we had beautiful weather the rest of the time. Here are the trip highlights:
Route 66
Not far from Oklahoma City, you can hop onto famous Route 66 and check out a few cool places. We stopped at the Arcadia Round Barn, America’s only truly round barn, and what used to be the most photographed landmark on Route 66.
On the 2nd floor of the Round Barn…Looking out onto Route 66…
Also not to be missed – a stop at Pop’s, a gas station with over 700 different flavors of soda-pop! Although I don’t think you want to be caught calling it “soda” when you are visiting…
There is a gigantic pop bottle outside the station, and tons of beautiful sugary drinks on display inside…
These are the flavors we made away with…I promise we didn’t chug them all at once.
These are the flavors we decided were worth skipping out on…
Overall, I’d have to say we got our kicks on Route 66…
I just HAD to say it!!!
Oklahoma City Memorial
This was a truly moving memorial to the victims and families of the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing. I was completely blown away by the design concepts, it was very different from any memorial I have ever been to. I had to hold back tears several times in the museum, which walks you through the events of April 19th, 1995 as if you were there.
Another chilling part of the memorial is that “9:01” represents the time before the bomb went off…the water represents the moment the bomb went off…and “9:03” on the other monument is the aftermath.
The chairs represent each victim, and roughly where they were found after the bombing. The smaller chairs represent the children. I’m getting choked up just thinking about it…
If you can only do one thing in Oklahoma City, this is it. I highly recommend it.
The Food
Of course you can’t go to Oklahoma without eating some quality meat! And that, we definitely did. We had great takeout BBQ brisket and turkey from Rudy’s and incredible steak tips The Meat House. Then Jordan and I stumbled upon 2 random places that were also amazing…
Just up the street from the Memorial is Blu’s BBQ. Great friendly service, and awesome BBQ. Jordan got the loaded baked potato with brisket. I was in the mood for a buffalo chicken sandwich.
While out doing some last minute shopping on Christmas Eve, Jordan and I stumbled upon Tucker’s Onion Burgers and said…Why not?!? We had already consumed copious amounts of meat on this trip!
Another decision we do not regret…totally my kind of burger, and I got the smallest one available! Plus, I really need that salt shaker.
The Cutest Nephews
The best part of our trip was definitely spending time with our family and the cutest 2 nephews an auntie and uncle could ever ask for! Plus, we now have a classic story of a Blue Birthday (Christmas) Cake…
I have never had much success in making cakes, nor have I ever been a cake aficionado. Despite my love of sweets, I am always able to pass up a piece of cake. But luckily Santa was around to make this cake, because it actually ended up tasting pretty good! And Bowman thankfully approved (phew).
We finally got to meet baby Lincoln too! He couldn’t come to our wedding because he was sick, but thankfully he was all smiles and crawls while we were visiting!
